After finding yourself in the throne room of Fortress of Cahbaet / study of Captain Dratis, the captain will approach you and react calmly to your unexpected presence, as you came from the dwarves, which means that you are not one of Barateon's soldiers. He rightly presumes that you wish to speak to their leader, Taranor. Follow the Captain as he leads you to Taranor. Once in the leader's chamber, talk to Taranor and explain Callisto's plan to him. Much as he does not normally approve of the Order's principles, Taranor's stance on the alliance between the Order and Cahbaet against Barateon is the same as Callisto's: My enemy's enemy is my friend. But before he can help you, he asks you to join his ranks and do a small favor.

Taranor agreed to help you find the imprisoned Narathzul Arantheal. However, the situation in his city is hopeless, as there is no food, and the morale of his soldiers is fairly low. That is why he expects you to join his army first, as he is in desperate need of magic users. Lately, he lost contact with some troops in the woods. The quest to find them seems to be of extreme importance, as the lost soldiers were his elite troops. You are to cooperate with Captain Dratis, find the soldiers' whereabouts, and deliver Taranor's battle plans.

Walkthrough

Cahbaet Sewers

Follow the Captain as he leads you to the city sewers. He will let you restock in the shops nearby. Once you have entered the sewers, you take the lead, and the Captain follows you through the ruins. Follow the main road, and you will come across a closed gate. Open it and continue along the main road. Enter a cavernous tunnel and again open a barred gate. Captain Dratis offers to take care of the huge massive gate that blocks your way and starts pulling the handwheel, which lowers the gate. To his surprise, there are none of Barateon's soldiers waiting to attack you. However, when you proceed further, a group of the Chancellor's Battlemages appears unexpectedly. Defeat them and loot at least one of them to obtain Cahbaet Sewer Key. The key is necessary to open the door nearby. Use the key to enter Cahbaet Sewers. The area will start changing from sewers to caverns. Up the stairs, you will encounter more soldiers. Kill them and loot at least one of them to get another Key. Leave the sewers using the key.

Following the Trail

  • Reach the Campsite

As soon as you have left the Sewers, Captain Dratis will mark the position of the lost soldiers on your map (check the location of the green marker) and instructs you that on no account should you get close to Barateon's soldiers as you are not prepared to face them. If you are noticed by the soldiers, the quest will fail. The safest way to reach the lost soldiers' campsite is by following the stream of the river, which first leads northwards and later eastwards towards the green marker.

File:Noticefromsoldiersdts.jpg
Notice from the Soldiers
  • The first trail - a notice

While approaching the campsite, Captain Dratis will talk to you about not finding the soldiers and points to a notice left by the soldiers near the fireplace. Read it. It says: Only stupid people call the Cahbaet Garden Brew by this name. The Captain, being from Cahbaet, knows the answer to this riddle. He informs you that the answer is 'Ebru Cahbaet' and explains that the soldiers wanted to give them a clue as to where to find them. None of the Chancellor's soldiers would know how the people of Cahbaet call this beer. Moreover, the Captain is certain that there must be another clue somewhere nearby.

  • The second trail - a chest

While standing near the fireplace, turn to the east, and you will notice three Clouded Funnel Caps in front of a huge rock. Behind this rock, you will find a hidden chest. Inside the chest, there will be another note and a quill. The quill emits a strange, magical glow. The correct answer to the task given is: 'Write with the pen 'Ebru Cahbaet' on the note. ' Choose this option and the letter begins to shine, and you will see a note saying that a spell has been added to your spellbook. Check your spell list for the 'Sharpen Senses' spell.

  • The third trail - bright flames

Use the 'Sharpen Senses ' spell. You will see the track of the soldiers marked by bright flames. Keep using the spell each time it ends. The first flame is to the east. Follow the flames as they lead to the SE and finally SW through a narrow rocky passage. When you reach an open area, the flames will point eastwards. Here you should notice a scarecrow. Go straight on (downwards) and the flames will lead you southwards past some crates and a shovel. You will find more flames SW of the nearby beehives. Cross the river and turn SW ( where a fox is walking), and you will see two flames in front of an entrance to a Cave. Enter the cave. Inside, you will finally find the missing soldiers led by Lieutenant Trimack.

The Sally!

  • Surprise attack on the enemy troops

Lieutenant Trimack will report that he and his soldiers were left with no choice but to leave the camp. Captain Dratis informs him about the planned sally. He tells you that you will find some soldiers by the gate and near the trebuchets and catapults. He also advises you to avoid getting too close to the enemy camp since you are not strong enough yet. Follow the Lieutenant and participate in his attack on Barateon's soldiers. He will lead you to the Monastery of Pandorn as well as the Pandorn Chapel, taking a northwestern route to the catapults. On the way there, some wildlife such as Northern Wolf and Northern Spider may attack you. However, Lieutenant Trimack will quickly dispatch any threats you encounter. Once you have successfully defeated the enemy, follow him again as he leads you and the soldiers to the Cahbaet gate. Here, you stop Barateon's soldiers from launching an attack on Cahbaet by attacking them first. After killing them, the quest notice will inform you that the sally was a success.

  • Report to Taranor

The Cahbaet gate will open upon completion of this quest, allowing you access to the city. Your next objective is to report to Taranor on the successful sally. You will find him in Fortress of Cahbaet. Reporting to Taranor starts the next quest, A Mad Venture.

Notes

  • Note that if you enter through the throne room entrance, you will have to wait for Captain Dratis to walk to you. During this time, player controls are disabled.
  • Captain Dratis will only deal with one battlemage during the initial ambush in the canal, leaving you to deal with the other one. He will actively fight against any attack from the soldiers in the sewers, though.
  • The campsite does not exist until stage x of the quest.
  • Teleportation is enabled at stage 85 of the quest.
  • You can skip activating the notice and just go straight to the chest to get the spell.
  • The quest spell must be cast at least once for the boulders covering the cave to disappear. The cave is near the Monastery of Pandorn.
  • At stage 150, your bounty is cleared, and you can safely approach the Army Camp without having to reload your save.
  • You cannot take on the soldiers at the catapults yourself, as they still have the guard scripts that will arrest you and send you to the exterior side of Cahbaet, Prison if you choose to go to jail when attempting this.
  • Due to engine limitations, corpses may disappear immediately after being killed. You can prevent this a little by not having any additional Followers or casting Summons.
  • The 6 soldiers and 2 Battlemages that are in front of the Cahbaet gate only spawn at stage 130 of the quest, after the soldiers from the catapults are dealt with.

Bugs

  • Captain Dratis will have no dialog between the period of finding the campsite and discovering the notice left behind until the notice gets activated by the player.
  • Note that choosing "Where are the soldiers?" when activating the chest will trigger a frost spell that does zero damage for 4 seconds. Nehrim Expanded fixes this by adding 30 points to the magnitude of the spell.

[Nehrim:Daring the Sortie Sequence Break]

  • In the classic version, it is possible to enter the office of Captain Dratis from the outside well before you are supposed to be able to, due to the door not being locked. This was since patched in the digital versions (v2.0.1.3 - June 26th 2020), with Sure AI stating "It is not possible anymore to reach the city of Cahbaet early". This statement is false, however, as all they did was lock the door from the outside, which only bars players from entering Cahbaet the normal way. Due to the topography of the land and the fact that Cahbaet is situated on a mountain that is nowhere near the summit, you can access Cahbaet pretty much at any time from the start of the game by descending into it from certain vantage points.
  • The best places to enter Cahbaet early are between the spots Cahbaet, Vacant House (listed as Cahbaet, Haus) and the Cahbaet, Sewers, as well as the very right hand tip (the square on the map) of the border of the Burnt Out City Ring. This will allow you to fall into the vacant portion of the map and use the load door to enter Cahbaet proper. Be careful using the latter route, as there are killscripts around nearly the entirety of the border surrounding the Burnt Out City Ring, which will kill you instantly if you get too close. This is hardly necessary, however, as this route is generally the most out-of-the-way route to enter Cahbaet.
  • On the map, the most direct route into Cahbaet is from Bridge of Stera, as the water that flows from there leads directly to the city. There are a few boulders here, but they can be sidestepped with enough precision to descend into the city.
  • Low-level players can enter the city starting from "Wolf Crossing", the fork on the map that leads north and south closest to the phrase "The Great Mountains" south of Cahbaet on the map. Instead of heading up the road and engaging the wolves, start by sticking to the rise and curvature of the mountains and rounding the corner while avoiding any wolves. Go past a valley and gain and then maintain enough height to surpass a few boulders and some invisible walls. You can then drop into the city once you are near the shed.
  • However, the throne room door is never locked in any version, letting the player start the quest early. There are no checks for the player to complete the quest out of sequence, which leads to the Daring the Sortie Sequence Break. This has a number of consequences, as it is unintended by the developers.
  • If the door was ever locked until the proper time and the player entered Cahbaet, they will be soft-locked if they have teleportation spells or are on a quest that blocks teleportation, as the main entrance gate is closed and the only other way out is through Cahbaet, Sewers, which is first accessed during the quest.
  • An additional soft lock can happen if a low level player enters Cahbaet early and starts the quest Daring the Sortie, as The blocked teleporter stones will start (Classic Version only), preventing teleportation and they might not be able to kill the required Battlemage in the sewers due to being underleveled.
  • My personal take on fixing this problem is to use the same script on the throne room door from the door leading into Captain Dratis' office and then add another script to the handwheel near the main entrance gate to allow the player to escape, but then close the gate shortly afterwards.
